Recycling

Maidstone's recycling rate is just 18% (2005/06), which put us far down the list, in the bottom 15% of councils. Some areas manage to recycle 50% of their waste so we have got a long way to go.

Maidstone Borough Council is responsible for the majority of waste collection in Maidstone, but we can so things individually too. Composting is an easy and cheap way of dealing with organic matter. Doorstep collections exist in some parts of the borough, particularly in the town, collecting paper and glass. Other areas are looking at community recycling schemes, such as Lenham.

FAQs:

Q: Should labels be soaked off of cans and bottles?
A: Generally, the process involved with recycling the items removes any labels, lids, excess food or drink, etc., so you don't have to remove them.

Q: Should the gummed areas on envelopes be removed?
A: This material tends to be removed during the recycling process, so no.

Q: Can aluminium foil be included with cans?
A: Yes - in the can banks at the recycling centres. The re-processor prefers clean foil, but it's generally considered unreasonable for people to wash their foil from their roast chicken dinner prior to taking it to the recycling site.
