Sustainability Indicators
How do we know how sustainable the town is and whether it is becoming more or less sustainable over time?
One way of demonstrating progress towards sustainability is through the use of indicators. Over the comming months we will begin to develop these indicators into a visual assessment showing progress (or otherwise). Most of these indicators will be measured over a long period and will not change more than once per year.
There are a wide range of indicator that could be used and this list give a flavour of these.:
- Percentage of locally owned businesses
- Percentage of food produced locally
- Percentage of journeys made by car / bus / train / bike / foot
- Percentage of procurement from local businesses by the council
- Percentage of energy from renewable sources
- Percentage of residents working in the area
- Recycling rates and waste per head
This following list was taken from Affluenza by De Graaf, Wann and Naylor. They are some of the indicators used in Seattle, but would go well with the ones above:
- Wild salmon (can't imaging we have many of these in the Medway, but these are other fish...)
- Biodiversity
- Air quality
- Impervious surfaces
- Population
- Water consumption
- Pollution
- Farm acreage
- Unemployment
- Distribution of personal income
- Affordable housing
- Children living in poverty
- A&E use
- Adult literacy
- Secondary school results
- Juvenile crime
- Youth involvement in community
- Birthrate
- Asthma rates
- Voter turnout
- Library and community centre usage
- Arts
- Perceived quality of life
