Composting Resources

The best way of recycling garden and kitchen waste is home composting. There is no collection and transportation of the waste, no land fill or incineration and best of all, you end up with 'on tap' compost for your garden.

The simplest method is using a 'dalek' bin. These are often subsidised by the council, but they will probably not be from a local manufacturer. Compost heaps are easy to make with old wood such as a pallet made into a box or even four stakes with chicken wire wrapped around them. Ensure that they can breath and are covered to prevent them drying out. Other systems like the cone let you compost meat and fish safely. For ultra hi-tech then go for a wormery!

Assuming you are starting with a Dalek... you should put in a variety of organic waste, mainly from the garden and kitchen. You should not put meat in these and wood will not compost easily (this includes large twigs). Manures are great to 'activate' the compost, i.e. make compost quickly, alternatively you can use urine!

You should ensure that there is fibre in the compost. It shouldn't be too sloppy. You can put paper and cardboard in the compost; this helps with consistency and seems to prevent it smelling.

If you want high tech, go for a wormery! Worms breakdown the organic matter extremely quickly and produce excellent compost as well as a liquid fertiliser.
